Multiplayer Video Games: Playing Together
A multiplayer video game is a game that allows two or more people to play at the same time or participate in the same game.
Players may compete against each other, work together as a team or simply share the same gaming experience.
Multiplayer games can be played together in the same room using one console and several controllers, across multiple gaming systems, or online with players in different locations.
For a video game party, local multiplayer is especially important because it allows friends to play and interact with each other in the same space.
What Is Local Multiplayer?
Local multiplayer means that players are physically together rather than connecting from different locations over the internet.
Several players may use controllers connected to the same gaming system and play together on one screen.
Depending on the game, they may compete against each other or play on the same team.
For example, in many sports games, several players can play together while sharing the same full screen. Everyone sees the same field, rink or court while controlling a different player or team.
Other games use split-screen multiplayer, dividing the screen into separate sections for individual players.
How Does Split-Screen Multiplayer Work?
In a split-screen game, one gaming screen is divided into smaller sections so several people can play at the same time.
For example, a racing game may divide one screen into four sections for four players. Each player has their own quarter of the screen and sees the race from the perspective of their own car.
In other multiplayer games, four players may share the same full screen instead of having separate sections.
The exact setup depends on the game:
- Sports games may allow several players to share one screen and play together.
- Racing games may divide the screen into two or four individual views.
- Party and action games may keep all players together on one screen.
- Some games support fewer players per screen.
This is why the number of players who can play at the same time depends on the games being played.
How Can Up to 32 Players Play in Our Game Truck?
Our gaming trailer has 8 gaming screens.
When a multiplayer game supports 4 players on one screen, the capacity works like this:
8 gaming screens × 4 players = up to 32 players at the same time.
That does not mean every game supports four players per screen. Some games support four, some two, and others may be designed for a single player.
For example, if everyone chooses a 2-player game, fewer players can play simultaneously. With 4-player multiplayer games, however, all 32 players can be gaming at once.
And everyone does not have to play the same game. Different screens can run different games for different groups of players.
Competitive and Cooperative Multiplayer Games
Multiplayer does not always mean competing against your friends.
In competitive multiplayer games, players compete against one another. Racing, sports and fighting games are common examples. Players might race for first place, compete for the highest score or try to beat another team.
In cooperative multiplayer games, players work together toward a common goal.
Games such as Overcooked require players to communicate and cooperate, making teamwork part of the game itself.
Both styles work well for groups because they turn gaming into a shared activity.
What Is Online Multiplayer?
Online multiplayer connects players through the internet. The other players do not necessarily have to be in the same physical location.
Fortnite and Roblox are examples of online games frequently requested at our parties.
At Game Trucks GT, Fortnite and Roblox are available as free optional add-ons. For Fortnite and Roblox, the customer needs to share their Wi-Fi with us. The Wi-Fi signal needs to be strong and stable enough for online gaming, and players need to use their own game accounts.
Most of our local multiplayer games do not depend on the customer’s internet connection.
Why Are Multiplayer Games Great for Parties?
Multiplayer games turn video gaming into a social activity.
Instead of one child playing while everyone else watches, friends can race, compete, cooperate and play together.
This works particularly well in a gaming trailer because several groups can be playing at the same time. One screen might have four kids racing, another group might be playing a sports game, while players on other screens choose completely different games.
Kids can also change games and groups during the party.
With 8 screens, multiple gaming systems and 150+ games, there are plenty of options for different ages, interests and gaming abilities.
What Multiplayer Games Can Kids Play in Our Game Truck?
Our game collection includes multiplayer racing, sports, party, action, cooperative and other games for PS5, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Wii.
Popular choices include games from series such as Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Super Mario Party, NHL, NBA 2K, EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, Overcooked and many others.
Because different games support different numbers of players, our Game Coach can help organize players across the screens and find games that work well for the group.
